"In Season" Flowers

I often have customers tell me they want "whatever is in season." This applies to a small percentage of what a florist uses on a daily basis. The truth is the vast majority of flowers are imported from Columbia and Ecuador where the flowers have the most hours of sunlight in a day. They do have wet and dry seasons there, but it doesn't really effect the availability of flowers. The flowers that are seasonal and not always available are usually grown in Europe where the seasons do change and availability is limited. Different tulip varieties and hyacinth would be examples of the limited European flowers. Orchids are available year round because the vast majority of those are grown in Thailand where the climate is conducive year round.

In short, when you are planning an event or just want to order a specific flower variety, always be sure to ask your florist about the availability of your choice, but know that the availability most probably won't have anything to do with seasons.
